Theme:Metaplot

There are two explanations for the convergence of reincarnated literary figures in a small, upstate New York community. The first is more frivolous, offering a tongue-in-cheek and easy reconciliation for these circumstances. The second digs more deeply into the metaphysical and theoretical. Either, neither, or both may be true.

[edit] Version One: Crackalicious

So, like, the gods are playing dice one day, and one of them (maybe Zeus) is like, "Dude, remember all those cool poet chaps that are all dead now?" And Thor's all like "Shit, yes. They were hardcore." And then Buddha goes and is like "How about we go grab their souls from purgatory and bring them back?" And they all think it's a hilarious idea, and then Hermes gets all up in this gigglefit and is like, "And holy crap, in, like, 17 years we can give them all scholarships to this private arts school and they can all hang out and be crazy." And then they all got drunk. That's how it happened.*

[edit] Version Two: Slightly More Plausible

The area is already noted for the healing qualities of its water, the clarity of its air and the pristine beauty of its seasons. It is a region steeped in natural blessings, and it is not difficult to believe it is also gifted with spiritual as well as earthly fertility. The Seneca from whom the original settlers appropriated land and space to live considered the valley in which Bartleby nestles a holy place, sacred to them for its beauty. The ample woodland that still abounds between farmsteads and around the nearby lakes are the setting for myriad ghost stories and folk tales of the inexplicable; there are rumours of a nearby native burial ground that has spawned the usual lore. Certainly Bartleby itself seems to possess more than its fair share of purported hauntings. Something in the area itself seems quietly sentient, *aware*. It's fertile ground.

It's important to note that some of the reincarnations have realized that they are, in fact, reincarnations, but that isn't necessarily true for all of the reincarnations, especially any new ones.
