[edit] Academic Geeking

For those who like to toss a little verisimilitude into their academic geeking about various and sundry topics, here's some good reference material.

[edit] General Resources

  • Adages named for actual people: All those laws of science you learned are here, as well as a diverse list ranging from Asimov's rules of robotics to the Peter Principle, from Occam's Razor to Godwin's Law.
  • Bartleby.Com: 'Great books online.' Has a good selection of reference works, biographical information, quotes, and text of entire poems and prose.
  • Digital Book Index: 'provides links to more than 145,000 full-text digital books'.
  • Project Gutenberg: Literally tens of thousands of books in the public domain, available online.

[edit] Language

  • Free Translation.Com: More or less what it says, though it can do entire documents, and you can hire a professional translator through the site as well.
  • Google Language Tools: The default translation tool for most.

[edit] Music

  • Cantaria: 'a library of traditional and contemporary folk songs, mostly from Ireland, Scotland, and England'.
  • The Lied and Art Song Texts Page: From the site: a huge archive of texts to 'Lieder and other classical art songs (Kunstlieder, mélodies, canzoni, романсы, canciones, liederen, canções, sånger, laulua, písně, piosenki, etc.) and other classical vocal pieces such as short choral works, madrigals and part-songs, in over 50 languages.'

[edit] Mythology, religion, and folklore

  • Encyclopedia Mythica: A diverse wiki with a lot of information about many different cultures and their gods and tales. Information is sketchy in the less-well-documented areas, but it's still a good starting point.
  • The Unbound Bible: Searchable Bible database with dozens of versions and translations of the Bible, many in other languages, and with a very robust search function.

[edit] Poetry

  • Poetry X: Despite the unfortunate name, it's a good repository for poetry of all sorts from a wide variety of poets.
